Last night at Plaything Gallery we hosted the launch to new online record label, Music Hype. On our rooftop location we had a wonderful audience who were treated to a live performance of newly signed artists, The Mint Chicks. I have always heard of these guys but never seem them live and wow! They put on a crazy show!

Their front man Cody Nielson got up to all antics, much like a gymnast teetering on our barbed-wire fence and rooftop rails, getting lost in the audience with his microphone and doing some crazy dance moves whilst swinging the microphone cord. Rock and roll.

My camera came out.

A couple of Friday nights ago, my good friend Ben King and my husband Adam Bryce took to a gallery space to create a music video. Ben King is a remarkable musician, no bias here, I totally believe so, a master on all instruments he is also loaded with a marvelous voice...

'Grand Rapids' is the name of his new band in which he sings for and they have just released their brand new album entitled 'Faintheartedness' !! The song we shot the video for is called 'Singing Showers Golden Lights', a beautiful, heart-wrenched melody with strong drums juxtaposed with a lightness and grace.

Adam filmed the video while Ben directed... while I got my face painted up for an hour like a voodoo character by friend and artist Aleksandra Petrovic, amazing!.. and then continued to be the dancer/choreographer/performer for the video!

Here is the result!!

Dazed Digital speak to the actress/musician/designer, Charlotte Gainsbourg about her new album, co-written and produced by Beck to be released in January 2010.

Named after the French-language name for MRI, the magnetic resonance imaging scan, the title and the album's uneasy moods reflect Charlotte's recent experiences. After suffering a brain haemorrhage during a waterskiing accident, she underwent repeated scans. "You nourish the work with whatever you've been through," she acknowledges. "The sound of the MRI scanner stuck with me... I played Beck the sound of the scanner - I'd found it on the internet - and said I wanted to incorporate it. I'll never forget that sound."

Speaking of the recording process, she claims: "Each session was stopped by a film I had to do, each film is an experience you take from, like baggage you carry. I spent three weeks in LA recording after the Lars von Trier shoot. I was quite moody.... Although I didn't feel the film had tainted me in a dark way, it had given me a fragility. Beck always made the effort to take it somewhere else."

Gotta love a girl band. And one that can actually play instruments and sing, whole package deal there.

The Vivian Girls are an all female Brooklyn based trio that have just release their self titled debut album. With an American tour including Hawaii and Puerto Rico, they set to take on Australia and Japan in the fall spanning over the next two months.

Listen to their single 'Tell The World' below
and read an exclusive interview with Dazed Digital here, enjoy!

I have been writing for French magazine LURVE now for three months and have really enjoyed the first issue. It is great to have a magazine out there that is battling the crowds for a creatively demanding audience. The LURVE website here has recently posted some fantastic lyrics from our favourite soulstress; Grace Jones. I thought I just had to share, they are very cool.

Love me in a picture,
Kiss me in a cast,
Touch me in a sculpture,
Whisper in my mask.

Don't ask me any questions,
My personal life is a bore,
Admire me in glory,
An Art Groupie. That's all.

Grace Jones- Art Groupie

Fantastic song and great phrasing which, for me, conjures up many visual images. Thanks LURVE!

Looking forward to issue TWO xx

On the 16th of July this year the sunrise coast in Suffolk will play host to the Latitude Festival. A multi genre festival with an outstanding line up that I am furiously jealous about not being there to see! From Grace Jones to the Pet Shop Boys and Bat For Lashes to Patrick Wolf, Latitude Festival is boasting to be more than just another music festival but is also offering a Literary Arena where Dame Vivienne Westwood will be reading from her manifesto; 'Active Resistance to Propaganda'. A collection of essays, it is full of ideas about art and culture that claims to penetrate to the root of the human predicament and offer the underlying solution...

Well, if your in the area...... call me from the Uncut Arena?

I just had the music channel on in the background while I was writting for a new magazine coming out (stay tuned for that xx) and the Obey 'advert' disquised as a Nasa music video cam on called (funnily enough) 'Money'. I actually couldn't help but laugh. How ironic that an artist getting sued at this point in his career has (his?) 'artwork' on a music video which is singing/rapping about how BAd money is, and how it take control of the world in a negative context. HA.

Well, how fitting.

Here it is anyway,

The people of our town have been graced with some great tunes as of late. This would all be thanks to the wonderfully dressed girls of La Beat Debauchery. Three foursome pair up every few weekends to play for a keen audience who are sippin', dancin', and lovin' this team to pieces! They wear cute lil' outfits (matching of course) and have the best collection of vinyl I have ever witnessed.

Heres their latest poster for their next gig in Auckland at the ever loved D.O.C bar....
See you there!
A silent concert? ..... seems unlikely? Well The Sads are looking at breaking that expectation with their silent concert at the Westwood Art Forum in LA next week. The audience will be given headphones to listen to the 'concert' while there is also a video installation shown on the walls. Mike Mills, who has worked with everyone from Air to Yoko Ono will be conducting this experimental progression from the usual musical experience.
