Nostalgic swimwear of the 1950's is
back again this summer, providing ample coverage and support, with a dollop of period glamour. From Miuccia Prada to Marks & Spencer, Stella McCartney to Toast, John Galliano to Boden, there is a vast array of demure bathing-suits, high-waisted shorts and one-pieces with little skirts attached. Even the lofty New York Times has noticed the trend, recently suggesting that 'the covered-up direction in swimwear has something to do with the tanking economy'; taking its cue, presumably, from the theory that the flaunting of flesh tends to predominate only when stock markets are flourishing.
