It's not quite The Real Housewives of Osaka. The latest Reality Show isn't even a show at all--it's a new magazine out of Tokyo, created and edited by fashion writer (and Style.com contributor) Tiffany Godoy and Tomoyuki Yonezu. For the first issue (actually 5 separate small magazines wrapped together in a giant poster), Godoy approached style icons who've caught the eyes of Japan's rabid street-style photogs--everyone from acknowledged celebrities, like Japanese supermodel Ai Tominaga (above) and DJ/scenester Mademoiselle Yulia (below) to the hairstylist-in-training Nirei twins--and had them style themselves in a combination of their own clothes and the runway styles of one designer of their choice. (Tominaga chose Japan's own Yohji Yamamoto; Mademoiselle Yulia, Balmain.) The magazine, Godoy says, aims to be "a window between Europe and Asia," but Tominaga, for her part, is a hometown loyalist. "I want Japan to refine what 'Japanese' is," she says in her interview. "Look inside. I don't mean look back, but look at themselves, look around." Fellow Japanese may be looking around, but odds are all eyes were on Tominaga herself tonight at the magazine's launch party in Tokyo, where she took to the decks as a special guest DJ. Those farther afield will soon be able to get their hands on The Reality Show's first issue at Colette and online at Restir.

There he was shaking his money maker for Edwin jeans again. Something about this ad that I like though... or maybe it was the summer heat and Meiji dori exhaust getting to me?

And Namie Amuro has a new album out. Here is a promotional big rig cruising around 'Buya. She is a major icon who I would love to interview one of these days. She came along just as the Shibuya gyaru subculture was born, also went on to become the first major J artist to do the r&b sound here early on.   She looks like an beautiful anime alien with those blue contact. Big sister watching over Shibuya.

Last weekend I spoke to a group of fashion and media students visiting town from Columbia College in Chic-ago. 60 years of Japanese street fashion history in 45 minutes. Whew.
They are putting on an anime inspired fashion inspired show in a couple of months--what would Kawakubo-san say about this cultural export influencing the world of fashion? I will try to ask her at the Vuitton-Garcons opening.
Here is me (shamelessly promoting my book again-put that thing away already!) along with some of the kids. Wishing them the best of luck and can't wait to see those clothes!

newspaper, not the beer...though both at the same time would have been nice. It has been very hot after all.

Was lucky enough to get a big write up in last Friday's evening edition.  Introduced some of my favorite peeps and places 'round Harajuku to one of the biggest circulating newspapers in Japan. Sub-culture confusing the masses. Nice.

Have a look-y at the issue! Better yet, go out and buy it!  Gwenny P is on the cover.

If there's any way Tokyo club kids could get any crazier, send us picture evidence"

Lipsticks!
Last night I went to the Fashion Editor's Club of Japan's 51st annual award ceremony.
The organization was started after the war to promote fashion in Japan....anyway, The great Shu Uemura was honored, as was Limi Yamamoto. One of my favorite people on the earth was there too, honored as international designer of the year.  Stefano Pilati.
Chic-ness to the ultimate power.

Here is Stefano with film starlette Rinko Kikuchi who was honored for promoting Japan within the international fashion industry as the face of Chanel.

One, two! Lay your eyes on the dress Stefano and the YSL team made especially for her!

What up lipstick ladies!

Went to check out the fashion designer Kansai Yamamoto's exhibition over at the Edo Tokyo Museum. I was prepared to be floored but, sadly, I was disappointed! The clothes got lost in this dark, huge hall, and the exhibition featured only a handful of looks.
Sigh.
Still they were incredibly strong. A few were from the collection that Kansai presented at his landmark show in London back in 1970 (ah, or 71?)- they caught the attention of David Bowie and would help to create the iconic Ziggy Stardust look. The photos here are by Masayuki Sugita, the famous rock music photographer. And props to Yacco who styled some of the other images featured in the show.
I caught the show just before it ended!

Anyway, you should know about these peeps since they are the pillars of Japanese fashion-culture. Google away!
Having technical difficulties so posting Daido in the next one!
