I'm on Martha's Vineyard right now and I just love all the farms.   Fresh eggs every morning, tomatoes and home cooked pies.  You know us city folk really appreciate, the goats are really cute and friendly.1mv.reggieworld798.jpg1mv.reggieworld796.jpg1mv.reggieworld797.jpg1mv.reggieworld795.jpg1mv.reggieworld794.jpg

This was served to me in a restaurant.   It was so cute. Have no idea what it was, maybe a cross between a snapper and a sardine.  The taste was something Andrew Zimmern would be comfortable with.   I had one bite which was enough.

Honmura An is one of my favorite restaurants in the world.    They were in New York on Mercer Street all through the 90's and moved back to Tokyo  about 2 years ago.  Their chicken meatballs are delightful.   A fashion and art world favorite, it is low key and very elegant.   The kind of place Eric Clapton can go and not be bothered.    They make the best soba in the world.   Their menu is very refined, wonderfully simple and eclectic.

I don't know if I would eat there, but I love sitting with a tea watching the people at Clifton's Cafeteria downtown.    What a relic.    Places like this barely exist anymore.    Here is the story:    In 1935 Clifford Clinton purchased the lease of the former Boos Brothers Cafeteria and began to transform the dowdy interior into an imaginary wonderland rivaled only by his other cafeteria, the legendary Clifton's "Pacific Seas."

As a youth, Clifford spent his summers in the Santa Cruz mountains among the coastal redwoods, not far from the famous Brookdale Lodge. This mountain feeling was the theme Clifford wanted for his new location. Working with rock sculptor Francois Scotti, Clifford created a 20ft. waterfall cascading into a quiet stream that meanders through the dining room. Redwood trees were used to conceal steel columns and a renowned L.A. muralist, Einar Petersen, created a life size forest on canvas covering one wall. A Little Chapel (click link to hear "The Parable of the Redwoods") perched high amongst the crags fulfilled Clifford's desire to feed the soul as well as the body of depression weary Angelinos.   Text courtesy of Cliftons.

I went to this fabulous little bakery/cafe in Echo Park today called Delilah Bakery.  Amazing food and great atmosphere filled this little shop.  Delilahs has everything from baked goods and lunch to weekend brunch.  Huge portions on the salads and sandwiches.  Too bad there aren't more of these tasty, charming little spots around town.

Jen Egan and I started a side project called theFETE to bring people together and discuss cultural themes, topics, and the days relevant issues.   Our first gathering for theFETE was this weekend. We didn't plan on wearing purple but hey, great minds right?  Our topic was "collaboration" and we had a wonderful panel of guests contributing their thoughts and insights. LAND deputy director Angela Robins, curator/author Paul Young, artists Karen Kimmel and Michael Salvatore Tierney, and cultural philanthropist Jessica Trent. Designer Paul Mittleman moderated the group. Jen and I sat in to keep things lively. Here are some of the pics. The video is in the editing phase. stay tuned.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank our sponsors for this event. Smartwater, Belvedere Vodka, Vita coco, Bear Flag Wine, Izze Soda, VIVE and Picnic catering.

One of my favorite restaurants downtown is Bottega Louie.  Romantic and airy with a New York feel.  This huge room has a cafe, Italian restaurant and wonderful food and atmosphere.  My favorite is the Carpaccio.  The brick oven pizza is also delish.  Downtown hipsters co mingle with business men and artists.    http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3281/2729153214_f20643a2fa.jpg

Restaurateur and hotelier Sean MacPherson says goodbye and closes Hollywood's ORSO restaurant.  Orso became a bit of an institution hosting Peter O'Toole, Al Pacino, and Kate Winslet among others.   I loved it because it was so private and low key.   I have enjoyed many luscious Italian dinners on their famous  patio and celebrated a big family reunion there last year.  Their beef carpaccio was unreal.   I will be sad to see it go and am curious of what it will become.  (photo: Joao Canziani)Sean MacPherson, orso restaurant, my l.a.

xm29.jpg xm28.jpgxm24.jpgWe actually could have made more.   That is over 200 ribs.   A little mac and cheese, some veggies and dip and lots of sodas, wine and beer and you can have a blast.     My tip....use plastic utensils and plates, cups etc.   Clean up is only one hour.xmasparty-9_44.jpgxm22.jpg xmasparty-9_56.jpg   xm25.jpg

Good food comes from good ingredients.    I love food critic, chef and author Alice Waters new book.   This time of year I am doing a lot of cooking and the simple things endure.   I like cooking uncomplicated stuff especially on the grill.    Herbs, fresh lean meats, seasonal vegies and good company make for a great dinner.

I love to cook and a comfortable, practical kitchen is crucial.  We cook almost every night and family life pretty much centers around the stove and garden.    At one point it was IKEA (gotta love affordable design) on the other side of the spectrum is Bulthaup, for now Viola is somewhere in between.  This fun little company Viola Park makes modern kitchens for the design lover.

ViolaPark2

Here is the article about Viola Park from the LA Times by Craig Nakano.

They aren't IKEA-cheap, but that's the point. Modern kitchen cabinets from a new venture called Viola Park aim to fill a void in the marketplace: something that's a step up from the Swedish superstore and a step down from the high-end "kitchen systems" that fill the pages of shelter magazines. For those who covet the latter but mourn their 401(k) statements, Viola Park may present an affordable alternative. The company, an offshoot of custom cabinetmaker Henrybuilt, will offer kitchens with an average price of about $15,000, excluding backsplash and counter, spokeswoman Lisa Day said. That's less than half what a custom-built, custom-fitted Henrybuilt kitchen of similar size would cost, she said. We have more details -- and, yes, more photos -- after the jump.

ViolaPark1

ViolaPark4The Viola Park spokeswoman said the $15,000 average was based on the assumption that most customers will order nine to 11 of the modular units, plus panels and trim. (That's about double what you see above.) Whereas Henrybuilt's cabinets are completely made-to-order, Viola Park's take the off-the-shelf approach, with a menu of modules in standard dimensions. How those pieces fit into place to form a functional kitchen will be the job of customers, with advice from the Viola Park website "and client support staff."

Woods are Forest Stewardship Council-certified; drawers will use the same soft-close mechanism as Henrybuilt cabinets. Corian or Paperstone counters are available at an additional cost. All the cabinets will be hand made in Henrybuilt's Seattle facility.

The Viola Park website has more images.

A friend turned me onto these amazing wines.    Enowines are a great gift and taste lovely.    The company is a boutique winery near Oakland Ca.   Specialty is Pinot Noir (my favorite) Granache, and Syrah.   The owner Sasha keeps things organic and local so the wines taste so fresh and fabulous.     I love the screw tops too, a new trend in high end wines.      You can order directly online.    Eno wines website24976434_329641db6a.jpg1369300301_08c72afe31.jpg.

Around this time of year I get nostalgic for my favorite holiday foods.    Growing up in Germany I used to go skiing in the Alps and Germknodel is especially popular here.    Coming in off the icy slopes a juicy Germknodel is just what you need to replenish your energy.
garmisch.jpg Can't they start serving this in Mammoth?    Originally from Austria and eaten in and around Bavaria you must try it if you ever come across it.  yes, it's totally a carb sandwich but who cares.  live a little.
germknodl.jpg What is it?    Basically a yeast dough dumpling filled with plum preserves and topped with melted butter and poppyseed sugar.    If you have the chance and are travelling near Bavaria or Austria please try this, you won't regret it.    No- you can't count carbs in Germany, they have the best bread, pastries and desserts ever.

If you know me you know I love to entertain my friends and cook big Italien meals.    During the summer my family hosts friends for big garden BBQ's.   I love to cook so it's more fun than work.   The key is preparation.   I usually make all the dips and sauces that morning or the night before.     It's all in the marinade.    My favorite foodie mag is FOOD & WINE.   Its elegant, contemporary, hip, has beautiful photography and lighting, and the recipes are easy and quick.

Most of the time I cook from memory or I improvise which is what makes it fun and creative.     However, there are some dishes you can't do that with.    I started a collection log book for my favorites.   Like the geek I am they are organized and separated by sauces, desserts, fish, salads etc.  Makes cooking super easy and fun.    I took this one step further and use this method to save clippings, design ideas, stories etc.    When I renovated my house I used a lot of ideas from magazines and it was easy to show my contractor a visual.   Works great for clients on jobs as well, show them a visual and everyone is happy to know what is happening.
Picture 9.pngPicture 7.pngPicture 3.pngPicture 2.png

To do it, you just need glassine  inserts from staples or an office supply and a binder.    I like the plain white ones and I type the dates on the back and file them in my bookcase.    You can also put colorful food shots on the cover.    (I also collect tears, design and historical articles for inspiration this way, its easy to file, you can see the visual and makes for a clean presentation)  This is super easy and a great way to stay organized by subject.
