March 2009 Archives

I found this gorgeous little florist on Sunset in Hollywood.  Check out Floral Rush.  I was very inspired by the feel and presentation of this minimal gem.

Under the creative direction of Nelson Hiltner, this shop is more gallery than store.

For the main event, if you're one of the thousands who've taken photos or shot video in front of Urban Light, submit your images to Flickr (photos) and YouTube (videos). The best of the best will go on view online February 25 as part of a digital exhibition curated by photography head Charlotte Cotton, and will be published in a print-on-demand book; selected creative writing inspired by the work will be included, too. Charlotte will also choose one winning photograph for the publication's cover, which will be announced right here on Unframed on February 23.

Along with this call for submissions, we've got lots of other Urban Light projects going on. Check out Urban Light's Facebook and MySpace pages for discussion, back story, and news, and follow our Twitter for little-known details about the object. There's an Urban Light PDA tour on the way, and much more.

We look forward to seeing how Urban Light has inspired you. Just be sure to get your submission in by the deadline--Valentines Day--and don't forget to check back here on February 23 for the winning photograph.

kolding09-3_600_400.jpgI really like many of the Team Gallery artists.    Jakob Kolding is one of my favorites.  Kolding's collages, which have been exhibited extensively throughout Europe, take as their subject the cultural collisions inadvertently set up by the contemporary city. Kolding's work celebrates a number of urban cultural, synthetic emanations (hip-hop, graffiti, skateboarding, electronic music), as well as the aesthetics of urban studies. Team gallerykolding09-4_600_400.jpgHybrids of invention and documentation, renderings and diagrams, his work depicts processes and events, historical and futuristic narratives pointing to propositions and effects of urban economics, planning, architecture, ecology, transportation systems, politics, and social relations. For every pair of Toms you purchase, they will give a pair to a child in need.     Toms makes cute casual shoes and they rally around their cause and the environment.  Oh, and they are comfortable!!   A company with a conscience and some integrity-I wish there were more.

Picture 1.pngok, every once in a while a product will come out that I am dying over.    IE: the iphone.   now there is another, the Flip mino HD.    LOVE, LOVE, LOVE.   I can make videos and upload to my computer in one action.   No editing, no re-configuring, no drama.    I bought it for my kid, but I love it too.     So easy, so cute, so well designed.   The only con is it has no zoom, but who needs it.   I have been shooting pictures on fixed lenses for 10 years.   More importantly, it fits into an evening bag.  A true party accessory.   Flip site(4inches-3 ounces)   A great way to put little videos up without the hassle of Quicktime, or I movie-plugs into your computer usb.Picture 2.png

Iconic Barbie turned 50 yesterday.     WOW.   Cannot believe.    Yes, she looks a bit like a hooker- but she is the most popular toy ever.    Mattel set up a Malibu dream house in Malibu to celebrate the icon's birthday.   Jonathan Adler built a sculpture of Barbies and C. Loubutin designed a signature shoe.  Artists and designers from all over the world contributed to pay homage.   All images courtesy of Mario Anzioni/Reuters.

If you want to read a truly inspirational story, Read entrepreneur Ruth Handler's biography- Dream Doll.     Not only did she invent/design and market Barbie into the most successful doll ever.   Hello, women in the fifties didn't do that kind of thing-let alone work.    She survived breast cancer and invented prosthetic breasts for cancer survivors.   The doll was named after her daughter, Barbara.   Gallery ImageGallery ImageGallery ImageGallery ImageadGallery ImageGallery Image

feat-pencil-300px._V251249385_.jpg  So elegant, thin, lightweight and easy to travel with- oh and totally environmentally friendly.    If you travel- you can't live without it.      feat-libr2-300px._V251264267_.jpgIt doesn't have that feeling of  curling up to a good book or browsing a beautiful art book, but for news, and magazines; so much easier.   The future of reading.

Who knew that you could start your modelling career at 81.   How great is that? And his muse was a woman (his wife) Great again.

L1060002.JPGNowadays, we see celebrities and musicians endorsing all sorts of products.   Beauty, fashion, electronics, cars etc.     Love Liz Phair in the Banana Republic ads.    A new trend I have seen recently is older icons gracing the pages and ads of fashion companies.    I love that elegant , iconic American artist Alex Katz (81) models for JCrew.      Lou Reed does hipster brand Supreme and last but not least, Madonna (50) vamps it up for Louis Vuitton.   Age has always been a mindset.    I know when I get old I won't be huffing it in sweats and orthopedic shoes.

Robert Berman gallery gallery website in Santa Monica had a great opening last night.   The group show was totally rock and roll featuring the work of Raymond Pettibone, Ron English, Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Gibby Haynes  and more.   Curated by Jon Cournoyer.    Shepaird Fairey was on the wheels of steel.   It was a beautiful night out- combine that with great art, a fun crowd, great wine (De Loach Vineyards and Barndiva) and good conversation and it's a winner.

Here are some of the images.musi09.jpg.

musi11.jpgmusi13.jpgmusi17.jpgmusi22.jpgmusi23.jpgHere is the clip from the Los Angeles Times.

Robert Berman Gallery is pleased to present the group exhibition Rock, Paper, Scissor on view February 28 - March 21, 2009. The show will feature noteworthy artists who freely use, base imagery on, thrive, and excel in both the mediums of visual art and music. The artists taking part in the show are Raymond Pettibon, Daniel Johnston, Ron English, Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers and Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon and Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth.
This exhibition highlights these artists who in both the mediums of music and art have created a memorable and historical body of work and continue to do so. Born from outsider roots stemming from Los Angeles, New York and Texas, they blurred the boundaries of aural and visual expressions creating what would become a hallmark of material from the period of the 1980's-1990's, eventually being absorbed by both the mainstream public and art industries. It's influences today are countless.

On exhibit will be paintings, drawings, collages, conceptual pieces and installations as well as ephemera including lyric sheets by Raymond Pettibon that have rarely been exhibited. Also a large collection or rare and early Daniel Johnston works, many of which have never been publicly exhibited, will also be on view from the collection of Don Goede, co-author along with Tarssa Yazdan of the definitive book on the artist "Hi, How Are You?". These works will be published in the next edition of this book as well.
A catalogue will be available for purchase
