I saw her yesterday as I carried wood down from the hill to the bodega.  The Blue Morpho butterfly.  The most beautiful maiden of the sky.  She lives all over Central America, and I haven't seen one in 2 years.  The butterflies and the frogs are the first species to die out when a ecosystem changes due to climate change, overpopulation, pollution, etc.  I thought maybe I would never see one again, but she lives!

Just before I came to Panama I went to the Broad Contemporary Art museum.  It was there I sat in awe over four Damien Hirst pieces. Giant stained glass scenes, created solely of butterly wings. Morpho is in there. I hope he killed them kindly.

Much inspiration is coming from the jungle, for me and many others. I feel so fortunate to be here. In other nature sightings this week: octopus, mating fish, mud snake, and many parrots.
Todo bien!

Whomever thinks there is no couture in the jungle should know this bit of fashion botany.  This week I planted Ylang Ylang in the garden. Ylang-ylang (ee-lang ee-lang) Cananga odorata, is a small flower of the Cananga tree. It is a fast-growing tree that exceeds 5 meters per year and attains an average height of 12 meters. It grows in full or partial sun, and prefers the acidic soils of its native rainforest habitat. The leaves are long, smooth and glossy. The flower is greenish yellow, and yields a highly fragrant essential oil, from which the scent was used by Coco herself when creating the formula for Chanel No. 5. I would love to share photos of my Ylang Ylang, but I am not quite sure how to continue my lovely photo journal of this trip, as my Leica camera was ever so quietly removed from my casa on Monday.  Yes I was robbed, it is sad, but I believe my lesson this week is to remember that material possesions are only temporary.   After all, when we croak, they can not come along with us... but it would sure be nice to have the 100 photos on the camera.  On the bright side, after an entire day tearing up the house looking for the camera, I decided to go have a surf to blow off some steam.  The Great Spirit above must have gotten the memo that I was having a shit day, so he sent me some of the best waves of my life.  Luke says I had a "level change" that day, I say that level was groovey! The rest of my week went like this...Had a Mexican fiesta with friends, went snorkeling, the foundation of the house got poured, took a bike ride to a cave, saw a tree full of giant zebra grasshoppers, swam out to the middle of the bay to watch the sun set, met a man with a giant hole in his leg where a parasite was living, worked on perspectives in drawing, went 24 hours with out water in the house,  bought an ATV and a trailer to move rock and wood at the property, y yo estudio espanol una houra todos los dias!

There is crazy thunder cracking outside as I sit here typing, I am sure a deluge is on its way.  It may just be a scrabble kind of day.  Adios amigos!

Hello all, and sorry for the delay in the offerings of my mind! J Kamm has been on the move for the last few weeks, but I have finally settled in for my summer abroad.  I am living on a tiny island in the Caribbean until October.  While I am here I hope to complete a large chunk of construction on my energy-independent beach casita, along with my main man Luke Brower! I am always seeking inspiration for art and life, and it is aplenty let me assure you. In the past two weeks I have set up my remote workshop, worked countless hours on house plans, logged at least 20 hours surfing, rescued a man from a boating accident, taped up MY man's head from a surf accident, fell in a snake hole, had ants in my pants, got a bitchin new Caribe-style bike, and planted 30 palm trees on the property. Life is good in the sunshine!  Let me not kid you, there is plenty of rain too. Yesterday on a 4-wheel adventure I saw a dead sloth and a tarantula.  I always have my eyes out for beasts and critters, and I will surely keep ya'll informed of any and all sightings. Peace from the equator!

I randomly chose a film to watch last night based on its cover..."Climates" by Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Was I in for a surprise! The director is Turkish, and the film is nearly perfect.Sublime. Stunning. Magnificent. What else can I say, I could not believe my eyes. Each shot is like painting. The truth of this film will grab you by the guts, and turn them just a bit. Netflix has is it...I already searched his other films. Enjoy!

The California Poppy is the State Flower. They are bright orange beauties, and they are abloom right now. State law forbids picking them, but it costs nothing to see them, and seeds are available to grow your own from many roadside vendors. Lancaster California is the place to be!  Driving around the area you will see old farm equipment and dilapidated barns... muy rustico!!! There are two ways to see the poppies.  1 The California State Poppy Reserve, $5/car entry fee.  The Visitor's Center contains a gift shop and exhibits and info, and maps of the trails throughout the reserve. 2 Find your own damn poppies... that's what I would do!

Last week I was invited as the guest of V2K Designers, an amazing boutique in Istanbul, to attend a fashion event in their fair city. I arrived on a tuesday, and was collected in the most amazing english taxi I have ever seen.  The car was the first vehicle ever owned by the late Vitali Hakko, the man who is responsible for high fashion in Istanbul.  Vitali opened Vakko, a high end label chain of stores in and around the city.  V2K Designers is their more youthful,  high end shop carrying fab fashion labels from around the globe. His son Cem now runs the show, and what a fine show it is. If anyone ever yearns for the days of old, when people ran their businesses with great respect to their history, and respect for all of their business relationships, these guys have it down pat!

After I was collected in my burgundy chariot, one of V2k's PR girls took me on a tour of the city.  Spending four hours giving me the dish on the tale of their fashion empire, and the tale of the city that blew my mind.  First, the city of Istanbul sits on two continents... Europe and Asia. There is a gorgeous body of water that lie between the two, called the Bosphorous.  This baby looks good by day, but as the sun drops behind the city, the real magic happens.

The next day I was busy with work until it was time for the party.  Now, I live in Los Angeles, so a good party is no news to me... but these people put me to shame.  The Turkish can make a serious party, and when they start, they don't stop.  I won't go into detail how I felt the next day, let's just say I couldn't keep up.  What is important is how on point these ladies and gentlemen were in terms of style and ambiance.  Upon the walls hung black and white images of some of fashions greats, and some hand selected lesser-knowns.  Vivienne Westwood, Karl Lagerfeld, Erin Fetherston, Rick Owens, and little old me, among others.  I felt humbled and honored to be hanging in such fine company. The crowd was amazing. There were the turkish versions of Spike Jones, Cameron Silver, and Lisa Eisner. Hot babes were wearing Jesse Kamm. Beautiful women were pouring glorious drinks behind the bar, and band Eight Legs from London had the crowd bouncing.  I highly recommend a visit to Istanbul, stay tuned for part 2. V2K rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jenna Malone has a new pair of shoes. Actually, just one. "The Shoe" is her new music venture, with her piano playing partner in crime, LemJay. It is totally weird and totally bad ass, I absolutely recommend seeing it with your own eyes.

The scene.....As I rolled up to the corner of Ripple and Fletcher in Silverlake one late afternoon, I saw before me a grassy null, which sat beneath two giant billboards, and next door to the beautiful LA river. A small crowd was begining to form. The tireless nymph (Jenna) danced about the grass preparing for her show, ripping the chord on the generator to retrieve power for the shoe. There were gourmet cupcakes and small whiskey bottles individually wrapped in their very own mini-brown paper bags for sale for your pre-show enjoyment.

The show involves singing, dancing, and tinkering with the multitude of sounds that come from their traveling hi-fi music trunk. I have no idea how you can find a show...as they are impromptu, and usually set up an a street corner, guerilla style. Invitations come in the form of a text or email, and if you get one it will go something like this...

"And while it gets hotter in the day
the night turns the page
and with a glass of lemonade
we will sing ourselves a new age

you'll see us when we turn our lamp on
bring a chair, a blanket, a dog, a guitar, a loved one, a pillow, a secret in a jar"

I made my first ever important art purchase this weekend.    What a glorious feeling.    When you buy a new dress, pair of shoes, or even a car, there is a certain sadness that comes with the idea, that one day this coveted item will be old and worn.   Though with a piece of art, I can sit back with a smug smile, knowing that each passing day will only bring more value to my treasure.   The piece is titled Emma.   I am madly in love.

The ever-fabulous illustrator/painter Claire Ellen Oswalt is having a show at Taylor de Cordoba gallery in Culver City, which opens March 15, and will run through April 19.  The show is called "Trustfall", and I just came from the Gallery, where I was able to take a sneak peek.  This show is going to be an amazing success, so if you care to join me in feeling smug... you'd better not dilly dally.  You can view past works at www.claireoswalt.com.  Enjoy!
I am heading to Illinois in two weeks to catch a few shows with my favorite band of the moment.  AARON KAMM & THE ONE DROPS are laying down some seriously thumping reggae groves, that will make you want to stand up and whoop like some wild bird.  Part blues, part reggae, and whole lot of pure unadulterated soul!!! These three boys joined forces about 6 months ago, and are already making serious waves with their infectious tunes.

The One Drops can be heard at www.myspace.com/theonedrops. "Live in Light" and "To Die For" are at the top of my list. They will be hitting the road with their new album in hand soon, and will be heading west! That tall handsome devil on vocals has the same last name as me... wierd! Enjoy kids.
