While everyone crowded the tents this past week in NY to see big guns like Ralph Lauren and Jason Wu, some of the best talent was found the other way.
In the second collection of
SAVANT, designer Feug Feng Yeh showed consistency. Strong composition, extreme fabrication breaks, and a bit of rock. The collection is titled, "The Termite Cathedral," and the message was a bit more edge. Her SS09 show graced us with romanticism but this time the attitude of the collection caught my attention. She is pushing forward, harder now with her chains, plush rich colors and super intense lines.
When you meet Feng Feng, it is easy to see how the warmth of her personality, her nightlife eye, and her spirit all seem to come together and express themselves through each garment she does. She is edgy, but not too edgy where you are hesitant.
She was an intern for Fransico Costa at Calvin Klein and worked briefly for designer Narsico Rodriguez. I like to think it is a cumulation of her experiences with these men that make her line seem so natural, but, it is her instinct as a designer, a downtown girl, a Brooklyn girl, a fashion fan, and someone who is not afraid to put herself out there and get more, more, more, of a life that pushed her understanding of where she wants SAVANT to go.
Feng Feng- you had me last SS08, and now you have me at FW09 in a major way.......
