This Friday I went to a lovely little party at the Jane Hotel in honor of The Art of Elysium.

Santogold tore up the stage, Matt Creed was on the wheels, and we even got to see Joy Bryant and Milla Jovovich try to wu-tang.

Ran into some old friends, and met some very cool people. If you don't knoe about Art of Elysium- you should.  Based out of LA they one of the few organizations that:

"encourages working actors, artists and musicians to voluntarily dedicate their time and talent to children who are battling serious medical conditions. We provide artistic workshops in the following disciplines: acting, art, comedy, fashion, music, radio, songwriting and creative writing."
.

Get involved, BESEEN!

The female POP star world needs something new.

Britney Spears is tired, Beyonce Knowles is going to be around forever so if you miss her this year she'll be back next year, Gwen Stefani has made her mark and is enjoying royalties, and Madonna, well Madonna keeps on trying to make music - over and over and over again....

I had a feeling I would end up liking Lady Gaga because when I first saw her I hated her.

Not even that, but, I was infatuated with the fact that people liked her ( no, I take that back, LOVE her) from the little music she has put out.  She reminded me of Donetella Versace's little sister only one that can sing (dance- not so much).

My switch from hater to lover occured one night after a looooonnnng night with Sonya. We were in the cab riding back to Queens.  Traditionally, we always try and convince the driver to play my ipod (works one in every 10 attempts, some have the gear, most don't) when all the sudden somewhere over the 59th street bridge the song poker "Poker Face" came on.  Basically, I sang along.  Whatever. It has a catchy chorus.

So the next day I downloaded it.  Plus the rest of her album.

I was embarrassed at first but I realized Lady Gaga is filling a void in the POP universe that we have been missing since Britney had a baby.  I'm too old to geek out over Miley Sirus (nor do I think I would if I was 13), and nothing seems fresh and original these days.  Your either Hipster, or your not.  Lady Gaga is kind of glam, fashion, POP, NY, Euro loving dance queen.

I'm digging it, digging it hard.

This video should throw you back to a time when people were listening to the radio, girls were rocking doc martins and ripped Levi's and your cousins had the flat brim Starter hats (or at least, mine did). Now things are pretty serious. The financial world is in total chaos, Sarah Palin is running her mouth, and a gallon of milk is $6.00 at Wholefoods. The stress levels are pulsing. Instead of feeding into the hysteria, choose to live. Choose to go out, wild out, and be around the good. In the in-between time educate yourself, but never, ever, conform to the madness. See, now you understand why in the lord's name I would post a Lidell Townsell video......

I like to keep my Fridays in NYC low key.  No club thumping anthems in the background, no lines, no overcrowded restaurants, no tourists in midtown cutting me off for a photo op, just real easy, yah know?

I got put on to this place Monkeytown in Williamsburg by my friend Brian and his bi-weekly list.  All i read was "Daft Punk.....movie premiere......robots.....Williamsburg......new Monkeytown space" and I signed up.

I fell into the space right away.  A room with huge screens on each wall and huge white couches underneath each screen.  In front of you are low wooden tables where you can have dinner from the menu (which smelt fantastic- and from what I read their stuff is extremely experimental) and drinks while watching the film.  You look up and there is the movie, you look to the left, there is the movie, you look to the right there is the movie, dope right?!

The film itself was funny, trippy, and symbolic while depicting these two robots who go on this journey to become human.  I get a kick out of the helmets every time. Don't expect to hear "one more time" blaring in the background either. The film is weird, and very very fun.  If your not into stuff like that the new Monkeytown is work the hike off the L train.

In what felt more like a block party in some abandoned pool in Brazil,M.I.A. performed in Brooklyn this Friday night. The energy was high, the bass made me feel like I was about to have my heart explode and the beers were less than $10.  The venue, Macarren Park Pool, was kind of surreal.  Its unique in the sense that it feels like you are in ruins from the '60's. This is one of her last shows to promote Kala and went out bursting with color. Wish you were there.

The SANTOGOLD experience is one that everyone should give a listen to. Its raw with her whiney voice, refreshing with primitive beats, and yes you can actually hear a drum set and a guitar in some of her songs. She is a smash up of the hipsters we love, the 80's music we listen to, a bit of Brooklyn, a bit of Dub, and a bit of new wave. Plus, she's just fun to look at. Lipsticks we all should be watching....
