STEVE OLSON

"My Art gives contemporary art a juvenile delinquent phase. Its
self-made style icons gleefully trashed conventions of beauty and
society while pick pocketing from the coolest underground styles and
beliefs of the previous centuries..." Steve Olson

Steve Olson, a pro skateboarder in the 70s and 80s and prominent
figure in the L.A. and San Francisco Punk Rock scene, creates Post
Modern work that weaves narrative themes of capitalism, pop culture,
social decay, and modern banality with the energy and fun of early
Punk. Steve Olson's work confronts and undermines the way society
constructs and imposes a traditional hierarchy of cultural values and
meanings by critiquing contemporary society and our relationship with
it. The artwork explores power and the way economic and social forces
exert that power by shaping the identities of individuals and culture.
Questioning the nature and extent of our freedom his art challenges
our acquiescence to authority and conventional thought.

Bold imagery, layered texture, deconstructed material and a playful
relationship between art, language and meaning gives this thoughtful
work a dimension beyond its visual impact.

October 30-31: MOVE!

Date: Saturday, October 30, 2010
Time: 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM

MOVE! is a two-day event merging the worlds of fashion and art through the collaboration of designers and artists, organized by V Magazine's Cecilia Dean and style journalist David Colman. There will be performances and temporary installations presented throughout the building from each of the collaborating designers and artists. Artists and designers include: Kalup Linzy and Diane Von Furstenberg; Rob Pruitt and Marc Jacobs; Terence Koh and Italo Zucchelli (Calvin Klein Collection); Tauba Auerbach and Ohne Titel; Olaf Breuning and Cynthia Rowley; Brody Condon and Rodarte; Rashaad Newsome and Alexander Wang; Dan Colen and Proenza Schouler; David Blaine and Adam Kimmel; Jonah Bokaer and Narciso Rodriguez; CHERYL and American Apparel; and Ryan McNamara and Robert Geller; and TELFAR + Lizzie Fitch, Rhett LaRue, Fatima Al Qadiri, Ryan Trecartin, and Leilah Weinraub.

MOVE! is part of MoMA PS1's Free Space initiative where artists, collectives, and nonprofit arts institutions are invited to make collaborative use of MoMA PS1's gallery space for events, rehearsals, and other live presentations.

Guests at the Marcel Breuer-designed museum on the Upper East Side began the evening sipping Veuve Clicquot and nibbling on cones of yellowtail sashimi, while art stars like Chuck Close and Jeff Koons reminisced about past shows. (article by Sarah Maslin for the New York Times)  Photos by Michael Nagle.

"I hung next to all my heroes," said Mr. Close, recalling his debut at the old Whitney Annual show. The Biennial now? "An emerging artist ghetto," he joked.

But the Brutalist-style ziggurat is now deemed too small for future Chuck Closes, so the museum needed to raise millions for its big move.

Established artists mixed easily with celebrities like Claire Danes, Bergdorf Blondes and art patronesses, about 30 of whom wore striking column dresses by Akris, each one a riff on a similar gown. There was a Cinderella twist: the gowns were loaners that would be shipped back to Akris's offices in St. Gallen, Switzerland.

There was also a sprinkling of pop artists. John Legend looked dapper in charcoal gray. Tony Bennett arrived in a sharkskin-like suit, and pointed out that six of his paintings hang in the Smithsonian American Art Museum's permanent collection. He said he sings, rather than paints, because "I had to make a living."

In the Peter Norton Family Galleries-turned-dining room, guest sat at tables that went for up to $75,000, under alabaster Venetian glass chandeliers and hovering panels of kaleidoscopic video installations by the artist C. E. B. Reas. It looked like Biennial meets Boom Boom Room.

It was not your usual scene from "Keeping Up With the Kardashians." In a crimson gown by Georges Hobeika, Kim Kardashian was touring the new Renzo Piano-designed Resnick Pavilion at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. After posing on the red carpet, she tweeted, "I'm at the most magnificent masquerade ball at the LACMA Museum!" to some 5 million followers.

Welcome to gala season in the art world, the time when L.A.'s leading museums roll out red carpets and stage black-tie parties to raise money -- and their public profiles. Last month LACMA grossed nearly $5 million with an event that drew Kardashian, Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Teri Hatcher and Christina Aguilera, who also performed. This month the Hammer Museum raised $1.3 million with a festive dinner (minus the red carpet) co-chaired by Will Ferrell, where Jane Fonda introduced honoree Alice Waters. And the Museum of Contemporary Art takes the stage Nov. 13, with artist Doug Aitken choreographing the activities and actresses Chloƫ Sevigny and Sandra Oh expected to attend.

For years, museum leaders here would commiserate with one another, if not publicly, about the lack of philanthropy coming from Hollywood. The industry has its share of contemporary art collectors, and filmmakers are visual artists in their own right, the thinking goes, so why aren't they supporting the visual arts in their own backyard?

fashionnightout.JPGMost people don't remember their first Fashion's Night Out--and with good reason. More than 800 retailers stayed open late to support and celebrate the fashion industry over a soundtrack of corks popping, Belve flowing, and text messages calling in sick flying to bosses. If this year's Fall Fashion Week, expected to be the largest public fashion show to date, with more than 150 top models stalking the runways and seats for more than 1,500 spectators, is any indication, Fashion's Night Out is equally going to be one for the books.

By Jimmy Im for Blackbook Magazine

For one night only on September 10th, New York City's local retailers will stay open late, hosting unique in-store events, DJs, customized cocktails, fashionistas galore, celebrity appearances, and more--and there are almost a thousand stores participating. Also during this time, NYC & Company is partnering with 40 fashionable hotels to show visitors the couture side of the city. Deals include discounted rates, gift cards, continental breakfasts, complimentary cocktails, and Fashion's Night Out apparel and canvas tote bags for shopping sprees the night of. Participating hotels include Fashion 26, Hudson New York, and The Pierre New York (a Taj hotel), among other distinctive hotels. The streets will be flooded with fashionable crowds all evening, so please don't wear your Tevas.
