November 2009 Archives

I'm very excited about the Eastside Eco tour this weekend.    This is a chance to see cutting edge contemporary architecture up close and personal.     Organized by FarmFeliz. http://farmfeliz.org/5BARBARABESTORHOUSE.aspx

Rachel Allen Architecture, Barbara Bestor and many other notable architects have designed homes and projects on this tour.    Will be inspirational and it is free.   Love.

burb.pngBurberrys new social media experiment, Art of the Trench is a living document of the trench coat and the people who wear it. It features a series of specially commissioned portraits by Scott Schuman (The Sartorialist) covering New York, London, Milan, Paris, Berlin, Sao Paulo and Venice.
On the site, you can view and filter images by popularity, gender, styling, trench color, weather, and collaborations. Plus clicking on the photo lets users vote for ones they like, leave comments, and share with others via Facebook.

Brought to you by the front-man of Devo, Mark Mothersbaugh Rugs. I'm reminded of the fun we used to have doing (ok...I just watched) Punk Rock Karaoke at Vida Restaurant in Los Feliz back in the mid 90's. Mark would come up and do his thing. It was so fun and so are these rugs!
Beautiful African inspired pieces from Moroso. The Shadowy chair lounger by Tord Boontje and Stephen Burks's pouffes both use a hand-weaving technique employing plastic threads. Stunning tradtional Afrcian prints are used for the Do-lo-rez cubes by Ron Arad. Find out more about the projects centered around Africa featured at Moroso's Milan showroom in Via Pontaccio. Only God Knows I'm Good
5 November - 19 December 2009
Lehman Maupin 201 Chrystie Street

Tracey Emin is well known for creating works in a wide variety of media--film, painting, neon, embroidery, drawing, installation and sculpture--that are intensely personal and revealing. Emin says of the exhibition, "This show for me is about drawing, about the line. To quote Rudi Fuchs, esteemed Dutch art historian, my 'salty line'.  Through my embroideries, the line I draw is accentuated and extreme, which complements the way that I think. I'm on a constant search for clarity. The title of the show, 'Only God Knows I am Good' references David Bowie lyrics: 'God knows I'm good, God knows I'm good, surely God will look the other way today.' Life is complicated sometimes."

The Triennial is ICP's signature exhibition: a global survey of the most exciting and challenging new work in photography and video. The only recurring U.S. exhibition specializing in international contemporary photography and video, the Third Triennial will mark the closing cycle of ICP's 2009 Year of Fashion, a series of projects that critically examine fashion and its relationship to art and other cultural and social phenomena. Through the lens of fashion--in its broadest conception--the Triennial will look at the proliferation of photo- and video-based work exploring the uses of style, image, and personal presentation.

The theme of fashion encompasses a diverse range of practices and ideas, including explorations of identity and affiliation; the production, distribution, and consumption of images and goods; contemporaneity; age; gender; and global industry. The themes of the Triennial express the exuberance, wit, and astute social observation taking place within contemporary image-making. These artists variously explore fashion--whether in everyday dress, haute couture, street fashion, or uniforms--as a celebration of individuality, personal identity, and self-expression, and as cultural, religious, social, and political statements.

On the 20-year anniversary of his groundbreaking masterpiece Roger & Me, Michael Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story comes home to the issue he's been examining throughout his career: the disastrous impact of corporate dominance on the everyday lives of Americans (and by default, the rest of the world). But this time the culprit is much bigger than General Motors, and the crime scene far wider than Flint, Michigan. From Middle America, to the halls of power in Washington, to the global financial epicenter in Manhattan, Michael Moore will once again take film goers into uncharted territory. With both humor and outrage, Michael Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story explores a taboo question: What is the price that America pays for its love of capitalism? Years ago, that love seemed so innocent. Today, however, the American dream is looking more like a nightmare as families pay the price with their jobs, their homes and their savings. Moore takes us into the homes of ordinary people whose lives have been turned upside down; and he goes looking for explanations in Washington, DC and elsewhere. What he finds are the all-too-familiar symptoms of a love affair gone astray: lies, abuse, betrayal...and 14,000 jobs being lost every day. Capitalism: A Love Story is both a culmination of Moore's previous works and a look into what a more hopeful future could look like. It is Michael Moore's ultimate quest to answer the question he's posed throughout his illustrious filmmaking career: Who are we and why do we behave the way that we do?
Drooling over these new Alexander Wang shoes.  aw  He is hands down one of the most talented (and wearable) designers to come up in the last two years.    I look forward to a long career ahead for him.

I'm crazy about gardening.   Gotten really into it for relaxation.   Great exercise too.  I'm in love with succulents.   I propagate them and now have them all over my yard.  I trade them with friends and give them as gifts.    I recently discovered wooley pockets.   They can attach to your wall and you can plant in them.   They are totally minimal and elegant.  wooley pockets  Made in America too. Love that these days.   Check them out.   I want to do a whole wall.   Amazing.

Cherry and Martin presents Noah Sheldon's second solo exhibition at the gallery consisting of sculpture, photographs and sound works that allow a free association of sound and vision, memory, landscape and bodily sensation.

Interested in synesthesic environments--meaning an environment that invokes all the senses in their totality, but not necessarily in their expected roles--Noah Sheldon presents works that allow a free association of sound and vision, memory, landscape and bodily sensation. An artist New York Times critic Roberta Smith has described as "skilled at separating beauty from the material world, while reminding us it is just about everywhere," previous works by Sheldon have included a photographic exploration of the rainbows that appear continually in the mist surrounding Niagara falls; an upright piano in which the reverberation of each tone played was modified by successive reverberations; and a motorized wind chime sculpture made from perfectly chiming fence post caps.  The results of Sheldon's work are simple, yet deep-seated.

Cherry and Martin gallery hours: Tuesday - Saturday 11am-6pm or by appointment. For further information and images contact Mary Leigh Cherry or Philip Martin at 310.559.0100.

Renegade film maker Abel Ferrara has a documentary out called Chelsea on the Rocks.   They may turn the Chelsea into the "new Chateau Marmont".   If they do I will stay there.    The charm is there and always will be.     Archival footage of Walter Cronkite, Wlliam S. Burroughs, and Quentin Crisp is spliced with performances by Ethan Hawke, Sherry Cosovic and Gaby Hoffmann.    The Chelsea Hotel has long been considered the creative epicenter of New York City, a sort of unofficial gathering point for the most renowned artists and entertainers that the city has to offer.   Jesse Carmody
