Is there a monopoly at my local theater now or what?

Earlier today I was surfing the net, altho I would've so rather been at the beach in the waves - it was 100 degrees in the SFV today, people!!  Anyway, here's my plug on www.12ozProphet.com.....I think it's rad.  That's it.  Today I read a post on it from Uncle Geezer the designer about another amazing web site you may or may not have already seen: www.ilovehotdogs.tumblr.com
It has awesome film stills and commentary from some rather exceptional movies that you should check out if you have not...

I think this is a show not to miss...I have seen Franziska Klotz's paintings before and they are amazing.  She uses black and pastel colors to evoke a very dark fantastical feeling.  Her compositions are equally as surreal.  Definitely go check out this show.

C E R A S O L I  gallery presents the fine art work of three painters invoking various photographic genres in their work:  John Grande in Gallery One, Franziska Klotz in Gallery Two, and Nick Potter in Gallery Three at the Cerasoli Gallery (8530-B Washington Blvd in Culver City). Opens April 18, 2009, and remains on view through May 13, 2009.
Opening reception is Saturday, April 18, from 6pm  - 8pm.

JOHN GRANDE   'Glamour and Gloom' in Gallery One
John Grande's oil on canvas portraits often resemble archival budoir photographs cleverly interwoven with archetypal gender narratives.  Grande's approach to painting is influenced by high fashion photographers such as Annie Liebowitz, with whom the artist worked as a printmaker for years....

FRANZISKA - KLOTZ    'Nowhere Right  Here'  in Gallery Two
Klotz's layering technique allows viewers to make connections organically, rather than immediately: the representational quality of the paintings are embedded  deep within the works. Delicious pastel hues are engulfed in shadow, cloaked in encroaching darkness and discord, conflating references to Monet and De Kooning.....

NICK POTTER  'Society of Spectacle'  in Gallery Three
Visually seductive, photo-real depictions of familiar Modernist settings and subjects constitute Potter's compelling and, at times, unnerving imagery.   Utilizing a gorgeous, sliding scale of grays in his black and white works, Potter employ elements of simplification and abstraction to build tension and to sow the underlying sense of anxiety and foreboding of our post-Cold War society...

Today we went for grilled cheeses at lunch (we have been on this kick since thinking heavily about attending The Grilled Cheese Invitational coming up on April 25th - please check out this site for info: www.grilledcheeseinvitational.com) and I was reminded of the classic Friday night ritual that has been going on in Burbank for many many years - the Classic Car Night.  It is every Friday night, in their back parking lot from 6pm to 11pm.  The cars actually start rolling in at 3pm to get good spots.  I swear this is still a really cool thing to do on Friday night if you are in the neighborhood and like the beauty of the classic car.  I absolutely adore the amazing paint jobs and really friendly folk.  The Valiant pictured below actually has a push-button transmission...frickin' cool.

Okay, this I like!!  A new vinyl shop in Los Feliz with a very clean and comfortable vibe.  The walls are a nice pale blue and the record bins all sit on very rustic wood tables.  The selection is good, and I can tell whoever personally chose the inventory has a kinship to Metal and the heavier side of music (which I enjoy too).  Up on the wall are some cool special editions for sale, the likes of Patti Smith, Neurosis, and Buck 65.  There is a nice range - hip hop, experimental, metal, rock, and electronic to name a few...and some very cool 45's to be had.  The employees were friendly too.  It is tucked in between Maya and Happy (another cool newer design store in the hood), so look harder next time you drive by and you will see their awesome windowfront with their retro graphic signage.  VACATION vinyl music 4679 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, 90027   www.vacationvinyl.com

This is exactly what Los Feliz needs!  A new store with $26 vintage tee shirts, a decent sized collection of hats, Samurai movies, household supplies that double for stash cans for your weed, and plenty of old shoes.  Vermont will be forever changed by this new store...I mean where has everyone in the neighborhood been shopping for Adidas caps?  Ok, honestly, I was hoping for a bakery...but in case you are out for a movie at the Los Feliz 3 this week, drop by on this Wednesday (April 8th) at 8pm for their grand opening party - FREE BEER!

I think these bears are so cool, and I am pretty picky about my toys.  They are available at SURU (7662 Melrose, L.A. 90046)..............Estevan Oriol's photo retrospective is still up at the shop until this Sunday...so, if you like serious LA gangster photography, go check it out.  There are a lot of female portraits in the show actually...chicks with guns, chicks in lingerie, and chicks in cool ol' skool cars.

Okay, so this Lego Movie Theatre rocks!!  The projector really works (3 fps)...it is really a mini-movie theatre...construction by Ricardo Oliviera (big Lego fan).
