I am stoked to say that I am going to meet John Van Hamersveld this evening to talk about his Retrospective that is opening this Friday, March 6th, at the Subliminal Projects gallery in Echo Park. The exhibition is from March 6th - April 4th, 2009, so if you can't make the opening party (8pm - 11pm) then find another time to visit. The gallery is a comfortable space. I think it has housed some awesome shows since it opened last year.
John is a graphic designer from a time well before everyone used their Mac's with their Illustrator or Photoshop to build a great image. He has designed several well-known album covers, my fave being his "Skeletons From the Closet" cover for the Grateful Dead's greatest hits record. Killer cover. The show is titled "POST-FUTURE" and with that I would add that John is an artist with a transcendent perspective. His vision is trippy, psychedelic, and also futuristic. He uses color with no fear and if you have never had a flashback, one of his designs may be the closest you will ever get.
P.S. I read somewhere that he may be the inspiration behind the iconic Rolling Stones tongue logo. Rad.
