March 2009 Archives

Nylon magazine's 10 year anniversary hit with their newest issue that features Lindsay Lohan on the cover.  She is suited up in Louis Vuitton and Gap and some pretty nice Urban Decay makeup on her lids.  Her spread inside has some nice shots (the Louis jacket from the cover is pretty darn awesome).  I am really tripped out every time I see this chick get shot because she can constantly look different.  Her face is changing with her age and no matter what she is trying to say or how she is actually feeling, I think she can pull it off fresh most of the time.
The mag is a good one this month.

Tonight.....
A great fundraiser is happening over at Against the Stream Meditation Society to help the Center stay on its feet during this season of wretched economic hardship.  If you are in the neighborhood, come by - they are screening the documentary on Noah Levine and the Dharma Punx movement that sprang out of his book of the same title.  The party starts over there at 7:30pm and it's really an awesome place, if you haven't ever tried meditation, and you are thinking about it, and what it is like - please, come check out this spot.  They have a website that lists all the classes and times:

Go see Luke Chueh's show at the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City tonight.  The opening is from 7pm to 10pm.  His art is rad, and it is a great space for shows.  Culver City on a Friday night is actually really fun - there are a few galleries on Washington you can hop around to - Cerasoli Gallery is next door and they have an awesome show up too.

I drove home after work and it was already gone.  I do not understand why they had to paint over that today.  I'd put money down that the abandoned building is going to sit on Sunset Blvd and be an eyesore for awhile.

I live around the corner from one of the many Circuit City electronic retail stores that recently shut down.  I knew it was only a matter of time until our most local street artists would hit the long blank walls outside the store.  MSK, my fave graffiti crew totally made the walls their canvas, and early this morning on my way to work I was stoked to see my newest neighborhood art.  It beats seeing some decaying, busted up storefront, if you know what I mean.

I am stoked to say that I am going to meet John Van Hamersveld this evening to talk about his Retrospective that is opening this Friday, March 6th, at the Subliminal Projects gallery in Echo Park.  The exhibition is from March 6th - April 4th, 2009, so if you can't make the opening party (8pm - 11pm) then find another time to visit.  The gallery is a comfortable space.  I think it has housed some awesome shows since it opened last year.
John is a graphic designer from a time well before everyone used their Mac's with their Illustrator or Photoshop to build a great image.  He has designed several well-known album covers, my fave being his "Skeletons From the Closet" cover for the Grateful Dead's greatest hits record.  Killer cover.  The show is titled "POST-FUTURE" and with that I would add that John is an artist with a transcendent perspective.  His vision is trippy, psychedelic, and also futuristic.  He uses color with no fear and if you have never had a flashback, one of his designs may be the closest you will ever get.

P.S. I read somewhere that he may be the inspiration behind the iconic Rolling Stones tongue logo.  Rad.
