A long time ago, I was in a group show with Laura London at the Angell Gallery in Toronto. While starting at the wall, I felt my work looked goofy and I felt nervous so I started to drink and talk about the U.S. health care system which Canadians seem fascinated by. All of the sudden, I immediately saw the images of Laura London and had to do some momentary mental wandering and I was happily trapped in my quiet ecstasy. Then I woke up, and had to meet this woman. Being the shy and coy gal that I am, I started to chat her up to find out what has been bouncing around in her brain and was wondering how she created her images.
The images I loved were from the "Rock Star" series, but she has created many more since Toronto. She has lived and worked for the last 16 years in LA., it's youth culture and the music industry has influenced her work. For instance, the same young girl you see in the rock star series was a personal friend. She told Laura what she wanted to be for Halloween. The young teen replied, "Marilyn Manson or Courtney Love!" Both of those artists have a profound influence on young kids and stories to tell, I think I used to dress up like Courtney Love in the early 90's with her baby doll dresses and young girl barrettes. She was a major influence on me at the time. I really did not yet see women, well Madonna, speak up and defend themselves and work.. They were both trying to play the Queen of Hearts. It's a combination of observations from teaching young teens and partially autobiographical. It's a scoop of identity and cultural ice cream.
Laura screams,"Each photograph has a narrative within the photograph, but they also function together as a narrative throughout the ten images that were included included in the series. The Miami show is like a mini-retrospective and it includes the highlights from my last several bodies of work and four new pieces that relate thematically to the "Rock Star Moments" series. Artnet and The New York Times have both reviewed her work, and I hope to see a book sometime soon!
And just a couple of facts, glen danzig is her neighbor and he does take out the trash. While living in the canyon during early 90's, Erin Everly was married to Axl Rose. They had a wild cat screaming fight one sunny day, and he threw the wedding ring in the bushes and spray painted ,"Sweet Child O' Die!" Outside their house and Laura took a picture and Erin asked who she was with? Her answer, herself!

· THE STAIRWELL PROJECT: Six contemporary artists from Miami's New World School of the Arts came together at the Sagamore hotel to create a vertical-type gallery. Each artist infused their own unique, innovative energy to create one collaborative work of art, throughout a six-story stairwell located off the main gallery. Dubbed "The Stairwell Project," this group of both, students and recent graduates, after meeting certain criteria, were selected to participate by New World School of the Arts' Dean of Visual Arts, Maggy Cuesta. Their personal artistic expression in transforming a separate floor of the stairwell ultimately blends each of their individual works into one harmonious piece of art. "The Stairwell Project" is the first in the continuing series of creating works within the hotel's stairwells.
Through "The Stairwell Project," the Sagamore has discovered an untapped space where emerging artists have the opportunity to display their work in this vertical-type gallery, creating yet another inventive way of immersing Sagamore guests in the art that envelops them everywhere on the property, through all spaces within the hotel. Guests who choose to take the stairs instead of the elevators will be brought closer to art through a cohesive visual experience- even within a stairwell.

· ART BASEL BRUNCH: The Sagamore's annual Art Basel Brunch has become one of the most sought-after invitations of Art Basel Miami Beach. Hosted by hotel owners Martin and Cricket Taplin (Cricket curates The Sagamore Collection). The first Sagamore Art Basel Brunch was scheduled to take place in September of 2001, but in the wake of 9/11, Basel plans that year were cancelled. Cricket Taplin decided to hold the brunch anyway, as a way for those who came in town for Basel to be together during the trying period following 9/11, and in celebration of a brighter future and next year's Basel. Opera Gallery's exhibit "Pop and Photography" features the richly diverse photography and silkscreen collections of Bert Stern. Legendary in American fashion and celebrity portrait photography, Stern shot the publicity photographs of Sue Lyon for the classic film Lolita and created portraits of many highly-acclaimed celebrities. His best-known work was commissioned by Vogue magazine, titled The Last Sitting, a collection of 2,500 photographs of Marilyn Monroe shot over a three day period and taken just six weeks before her death. RUSSIAN DREAMS Opening December 4
Russian Dreams, an exhibition opening at the Bass Museum of Art, presents a selection of cutting-edge works by contemporary artists from Russia. Curated by Olga Sviblova, who curated the Russian Pavilion at the 2007 Venice Biennale, the exhibition explores Russian art's evolution from the pre-Glasnost era to the present day. The work of modern Russian artists are juxtaposed with the new generation of young artists. The first group of artists came to prominence in the 1980- 90s, during the epoch of the Russian underground, and the latter group of artists- currently between 20 and 30 years old - developed their work in a new, post-Perestroika Russia when government bans on personal expression were lifted, changing the scope of established artists' work.

MARK DI SUVERO SCULPTURE EXHIBITION AT FAIRCHILD Opens December 6
Renowned artist Mark di Suvero's enormous steel sculptures will rise over Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden's world famous flowering trees and vines, lush rainforest and bustling butterfly garden. His sculptures were created with diverse spaces to engage the observer with changing dimensions as they approach it and move through it. Mark di Suvero at Fairchild will be on exhibit through May 31, 2009. Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, $10 for children 6-17, and free for children 5 and under and Fairchild members. THE STAIRWELL PROJECT Ongoing
Six contemporary artists from Miami's New World School of the Arts created a vertical-type gallery at the Sagamore Hotel. Each artist infused their own unique, innovative energy to create one collaborative work of art, throughout a six-story stairwell located off the main gallery. Dubbed "The Stairwell Project," this group of both students and recent graduates were selected by NWSA Dean of Visual Arts, Maggy Cuesta. Their personal artistic expression in transforming a separate floor of the stairwell ultimately blends each of their individual works into one harmonious piece of art. The Standard, Miami welcomes Malcolm McLaren for the Miami premier of his acclaimed featured-length video work "Shallow" on Sunday, November 9th at 8pm. "Shallow" (2007-2008) is a feature-length color video art work consisting of individual film clips sourced from erotic films of the late 1960''s. Devised as a series of "musical paintings" in alternating slow motion tempos and precise edits, McLaren deliberately selected moments immediately preceding or following sex scenes - extending a handful of frames into nearly still portraits of seduction and artifice.
Malcolm Mclaren, founder of the Sex Pistols, was born in 1946 in London and currently lives and works in Paris and New York. The artist was invited to speak at Art Basel in the conversations lecture series on Punk and contemporary art and the following year he returned to Basel to Premier his first film, entilted Shallow. Mclaren's sex and seditionaries clothing series (originally conceived during his partnership with Vivienne Westwood) was recently exhibited in the Anglomania show at the Metropolitian Museum of Art in 2006. Upcoming Projects include the development of a stage musical about fashion.
Malcolm Mclaren has been invited to present his film work as part of The Standards Lovelife series.
