The first experience I had at Shopins was with my new boss Matt Mahurin. As I strolled in the location on Bedford Street, which looked liked an old grocery store; Mr. Shopin asked me, "If I would like to sit by the window to stroll for some cock?" Since I was already nervous having lunch for the first time with my new boss I just stood there my face turning different colors like his food, I starred at him until someone did push me near the window to stroll for some cock!  I wanted to have a veggie burger, but Matt said to have soup. Well, that made me nervous too, he a zillion soups on the menu. So I ordered vegetarian soup and he said, "Fuck that I'll make you something better." Being a meticulous eater, I was scared what he was going to bring back. Perhaps chicken soup with the claw in the bowl. Or fish soup with the dead open eyes. Well, it was Cactus soup, with a big cactus in the middle. And well, it was good!  So I brought some friends there, and we got thrown out because one of them wanted to eat the nachos without the  black beans. Another time, just as our food was arriving my friend forgot to turn her cell phone off and that was it! He told us to get the Fuck out of his kingdom. After 32 years Shopins loses his lease and his customers go bonkers. Mahurin recorded the move to Carmine Street and what we see is a comical yet sensitive man not just in his kitchen, but also in life.  And lots of interesting characters have a lot to say about this man and his kingdom.

I used to live on Carmine Street, so when he moved I would eat there more often, it was super delicious and it's sad that joints like this are closing up in NYC while all the glass buildings go up. So thank you Matt for introducing me to Shopins while I alert my one or two readers about your film. I LIKE KILLING FLIES by Matt Mahurin gazes into Shopins, an authentic Manhattan restaurant that has been serving comfort food to regulars for nearly 30 years. Kenny Shopin is a philosopher as well as a fly swatting champion. When he retires, he could possibly take up the sport.  NY Times gave it 5 starts as well as any other critic. I saw it on the big screen, but recently re-rented because I miss New York so much, especially my old neighborhood!

Happy Bat Mitzvah to me
Happy Bat Mitzvah to me
Today, May 16th is my Bat Mitzvah anniversary!!
You know, sometimes I feel sad that I am the last standing single gal of all my pals.
Even last week, I received a hot pink wedding invitation in an orange envelope. Does that scream Miami or New Jersey? And of course, I responded YES, because hell I'll go to any party, even if I dislike the person. But now, my best friends all have their new best mates and are reproducing like rabbits. And it's a different vibe and I may never become a bride. Will Jewish Speed dating save me? So, I keep myself in check. I too had a very special day in 1987. Cara's Winter Wonderland was envisioned by my parents and executed by Lee Brian Schrager who now is the d

irector of special events and media relations at Southern Wine and Spirits. But he did a kick ass job, and my party rocked better than most weddings and some marriages! I love you Jill and Steve Bloch!

Before hipster became hip, Audrey Bernstein, the Queen Bee of fun, hosted the best Monday night party on the planet at E&O, now Jane Restaurant in New York City. In 1997, I knew no one in NYC; an art school snob introduced me to this fantasy fun, arty people, groovy hair, and the best music I've heard since my Slayer day's party. I went every Monday and danced till the lights came on. I spent my 23rd and 24th birthdays' with the chic and stylish Audrey and when she became my friend on FRIENDSTER I almost had a heart attack. I almost crashed one of her Christmas parties just to meet her, but that was in LA and fortunately for her I got lost. All of my good friends today attended that party, and we didn't know each other in the late 90's. We still talk about her and the Monday night madness. Like most things grand, they come to an end. Now, she's launched an empire known as "Oh Audrey" and it looks again like she started that party that never wants to end!
