April 2008 Archives

Gillian Laub image face.jpg

Isn't this a great image? Like in your top 10 memory file? I wish I had this 30x40 hanging over my bed, or perhaps in my imaginary living room. Before Laub became a star, she used to send these 8x10 prints out to her friends for a holiday gift. What she doesn't know is I framed mine, and I think she should start that tradition up again. Everybody would like a Laub print.

However, since 1998 Laub has become serious and published an amazing collection of photographs published by aperture entitled, "TESTIMONY." Her subjects are Israeli Jews, Israeli Arabs, displaced Lebanese families, and Palestinians-each personality affected by the geopolitical context in which they live. It's a great book to bring home to your Pro - Israel Orthodox Passover Seder. What I love about this book, is that it shows the pain, frustration, and agony of war from all sides. And that is important to recognize and understand. CNN needs this book, Fox needs this book, my Rabbi stole it from me for 5 months, not very Rabbi like!  A+ for Laub, but if you have the time to venture on her web-site www.gillianlaub.com you will see images from this body of work, but also her family pictures which are just bursting with fruit flavor!

On Tuesday, the 15th of April I was invited to attend The Young Society of Love and Hope soiree celebrating the Diabetes Research Institute at the Rubell Family Collection which featured a presentation of the Fall 2008 collection of the JUST CAVALLI line. It was $75.00 per person.

To begin, anyone visiting Miami must see The Rubell Family Collection which is located at 95 NW 29th Street Miami Wynwood District. This is a beautiful place to have a party. If I were to hop in my time machine and travel back to bat Mitzvah time in 1987, I would have Cara's Winter Wonderland here. It's open, so people are not cramped inside smelling each other's bad breath. Secondly, they have an outside rock garden where you can happily sit down and socialize with smokers and socialites. Now usually I would NEVER pay any money to go to a party. I would climb trees, pretend I was part of the staff, hang out near the clipboard and steal a name off the list, or I would place my arm around some man glistening with botox and smile. When I am really desperate, I pretend I'm part of a celebrity entourage and I carry cigars or guns. However, I figured I'm in my 30's now and that type of behavior really is not appropriate. To conclude, this is the first party I paid to get into and I'm bursting with glee because it went to a good cause.

Well, while looking at this SocialMiami.com (who to know. where to go.) I was hot and bothered why my picture with my date Syd Shapiro did not make the cut. They must have photographed us at least 5 times, one guy with no flash so we had to stand forever, and syd was photographed more than Britney. Was my hair not right, did my uneven face freak out the editor? Did my herpe make an appearance?  Who is this editor? What's wrong with SocialMiami.Com??? Oh well! We stole a socialite and had our own party night. Thank you David Simkins.  If

The Evens.jpgMy doctor called me on Tuesday and asked me if I ever heard of Hashimoto? My response was, "Oh that Japanese disco I missed while living it up in Tokyo scene?"
"No!" he said in a serious stern voice. "You may have a thyroid condition." I must say that GOD gave me height;I'm 5'10, not health. There is always something new and exciting for me to look forward too concerning the demise of my body and soul. Yes, I cried out loud and accidentally bumped into the car in front of me, but the lady had no idea what was going on because she had earphones plugged in while driving. Perhaps she thought Florida suffered its first earthquake.

I got home and decided to clean my room to distract myself and found the evens CD that I bought at Books&Books. I finally played it after 5 months of it camping out underneath my bed. The first song entitled, "shelter two" had amazing lyrics that I could relate to. the evens sing: "went to Arlington hardware to buy some electrical tape, you went to Tulsa and I'm going to wait. it's all downhill from here." the evens are Ian Macaye and Amy Farina, and boy oh boy does Amy have a beautiful voice. And as Amy sings, "it's all downhill from here," over and over again, I felt better and embraced the negativity because finding out yet again I have another rare disease that no one else
Back of Evens cover.jpg has ever heard of will only make me stronger, right?? Furthermore, this record was recorded and mixed at inner ear studios, which made me like it even more because in Aug of 2005 amazing doctors thought I had a rare inner ear condition. FUN STUFF! In conclusion, this record is miraculous, so buy it! It made me feel better. And if anyone ever has a question about Vertigo, I may be able to help!

In 1998 Madeleine Kirsh opened an amazing 10,000 square foot space found on Biscayne Boulevard in North Miami Beach called C. Madeleine's.  The store truly is a vintage utopia with everyone from Milla Jovovich, Chole Sevingy, and Madonna flocking around like wild animals searching for designer vintage Chanel suits, hot pink Pucci day dresses, Badgley Mishka cocktail attire, Bill Blass floral flocks and if you're a Cher fanatic this is the place where Bob Mackie Dresses come to die. The jewelry section is even more delicious to look at; it's like entering the Wonka Factory and you are looking for that golden ticket. Vogue called the store "Miami's best kept secret," and the word on the street is that C' Madeleine's is best described as one of "the fashion wonders of the world."

However, unless you are a super stylist the staff watches you like hawks the second you step foot in the door. As you enter the store, you must lock your items in a high school locker and walk around with someone who works there to make sure you do not steal anything. The store is amazing, like a museum, and if you're a die-hard fashion fanatic ready to throw down some cash, this is the place for you.

The story begins when I had to pick out some jewelry to dazzle up an pink prom bridesmaid dress and I thought I would find my magic at C. Madeleine's. As I walked in, the paranoia began and the ladies followed me around just waiting for me to even try and steal something. I ended up spending $300.00 for a necklace and a ring. I adore my ring even though it was annoying to buy it. When my gal pal Vida came to town for the wedding, another vintage fanatic, I decided to take her to C.Madeleines to show her the palace. The second we walked in and the kooky hawks spotted us, she went bonkers and dug her nails into me and said,  "We are off to Red, White, and Blue."

Red, White, and Blue is another amazing vintage wonderland where you don't have to check your suitcase at the door. It's another one of Miami's best-kept vintage secrets.  As a photographer I hit the jackpot when I found an Sx-70 Polaroid camera just lying by it's lonely self. I almost took down a 90-year-old woman who was just looking at the candlesticks behind it, just to grab it when nobody there had any intentions to buy it!  I also bought lamps for my bedroom here and then I was horrified and shocked to find the same  $150.00 pearl necklace I bought at C. Madeleines for $2.00 dollars at the register! Vida kept laughing as my Irish Jew face turned beet red. I felt like reporting that store to the fashion police!  Vida said this is Miami's best-kept Vintage Wonderland.

A year later, a pinklicious fairy danced into town, spent 2 hours at Red, White, and Blue strolling out with a plethora of shirts and one major tutu all under 10 bucks!
